Peter Johnston joined Canterbury in 1984 as a prop forward.
Peter started in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against Parramatta as a replacement. Peter became a regular member of the reserve grade team.
In 1985, Peter was a regular member of the reserve grade team but was injured before the finals.
In 1986, Peter started the season late and became a regular member of the reserve grade team.
Peter was called into first grade for the injured Peter Kelly to play in the Semi-Final against Parramatta and was a reserve in the Grand Final against Parramatta.
In 1987, Peter joined Easts (Roosters) to play 21 games between 1987 and 1988. In 1989, Peter joined Newcastle to play 45 games from 1989 to 1991.
