Jim Duncombe joined Canterbury in 1938 as a five eighth securing a reserve grade spot. Jim played first grade when Ted Anderson was injured.
He was fortunate to play in the Premiership winning team in 1938, scoring a try on the day.
In 1939, Jim captained the Premiership winning reserve grade team, playing all games that season.
In 1940, Jim became coach of the reserve grade team playing some matches as captain-coach.
He continued coaching reserve grade in 1941.
