Jack Hartwell joined Canterbury in 1946 as a centre.
The son of Jack Hartwell Snr who played in the inaugural 1935 team, Hartwell Jnr secured a position in reserve grade in his first season of grade.
In 1947, Jack received an opportunity in first grade when Morrie Murphy was injured and played wing on the day. In 1948, Jack secured a first grade position on the wing.
The next three seasons were lean before Jack came back in 1951 to secure a centre position in first grade.
